Parisa Tabriz: "The Security Princess"

Parisa Tabriz:

Introduction

In a field historically dominated by men, Parisa Tabriz has emerged as one of cybersecurity’s most influential voices over the past decade. She has become widely known within the industry as Google’s “Security Princess” (former title) or more recently, “The Browser Boss.” Tabriz has not only more efficient ways to secure the internet, but she’s also become a role model and trailblazer for women and underrepresented groups pursuing careers in technology.

Early Life & Influences

Parisa Tabriz was born in 1983 in Chicago, Illinois, to an Iranian father (a doctor), a Polish-American mother (a nurse), and two younger brothers. Growing up, Tabriz enjoyed competing with her brothers in the arts and sports. This dynamic with her two brothers would be preparation and foreshadowing of the obstacles that would come later in her career, helping her break industry norms as a woman in male-dominated landscapes. Tabriz would go on to eventually find her passion in math and science, laying the foundation for future pursuits.

While her home life was rich in culture and intellect, computers and programming had not yet assimilated into everyday life. Many homes did not even have a computer in their house until the mid 90’s. In fact, Tabriz wasn’t introduced to the world of computers until her first year of college.

Education & Awakening to Security

Tabriz would go on to enroll at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, initially studying computer engineering, her focus shifted to computer science after discovering a passion for coding. She earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Computer Science, during which she conducted research on wireless security and privacy technologies, co-authoring papers with her advisor.

Her interest in cybersecurity deepened when a website she built as a student was hacked, an event that pushed her to join a student security club. Here, she learned about exploiting vulnerabilities and breaching security. This experience became transformative for Tabriz, expanding her knowledge and passion for security. Tabriz also realized how extreme the lack of diversity is in this field. Another obstacle, Parisa intended to break down, to prove that inclusion of underrepresented groups provides financial and career security that many people do not have access to.

Landing at Google & Early Career

While still in college, Tabriz secured a summer internship with Google’s security team and joined the company full-time shortly after graduating in 2007. Tabriz was a part team of engineers who could “think like hackers” that Google would employ to test and safeguard the company’s products and infrastructure. This was just the beginning of Tabriz’s dynamic career.

Initially, her title was simply “Information Security Engineer,” which, after countless industry events, she decided was bland and lifeless. She began replacing her official title with “Security Princess,” adding a humorous take to the dry corporate label she had identified with previously. This helped her stand out as someone with charisma and confidence. The name stuck, and she came to be widely known by it within and beyond Google.

Growth, Recognition, and Impact

This unique blend of technical expertise and leadership soon propelled Tabriz into the spotlight:

    • (2012) Forbes “30 Under 30 Technology.” - Tabriz was included on Forbes’ influential list, highlighting young trailblazers shaping the future of tech.
    • (2017) Wired’s “20 Tech Visionaries.” - Her impact was also recognized among innovators pushing the boundaries of the tech world.
    • (2018) Fortune “40 Under 40” - In 2018, Fortune recognized her leadership in business and technology.
    • White House U.S. Digital Service - For a time, Tabriz was even a consultant to enhance the security of government technology

Leadership, Innovation & the OURSA Initiative

Tabriz’s influence extends well beyond awards. She has spoken at major cybersecurity forums, including headline keynotes at events like Black Hat USA, one of the world’s premier security conferences.

In 2018, an industry conference (RSA) featured only one woman as a keynote speaker out of 20. Tabriz immediately took action, leading her to co-found Our Security Advocates (OURSA), a conference designed to showcase security experts from historically underrepresented backgrounds. Remarkably, the first OURSA line-up, organized in just five days, featured 14 women among its speakers, reinforcing her commitment to diversity and inclusion in tech.

At Google, Tabriz continued to rise through the ranks, taking on broader leadership roles within the Chrome security team, helping drive widespread adoption of encryption protocols such as HTTPS, and overseeing efforts to protect users on the world’s most widely used browser.

Legacy & Inspiration

Parisa Tabriz’s story is one of transformation. From a student who “didn’t touch a computer until college” to a global cybersecurity leader. Her journey highlights the importance of representation, curiosity, and resilience, especially for women navigating tech spaces where they remain underrepresented. Her ongoing work continues to inspire the next generation of women in STEM. Whether securing software infrastructure, mentoring young engineers, or reshaping industry culture, Tabriz’s career and mission remind us that tech should be fun, exciting, and inclusive of everybody.
